Executive Secretary and Yemeni Ambassador Sign Agreement |
The United Nations Under-Secretary-General and UN-ESCWA Executive Secretary, Ambassador Bader Omar AlDafa, and the Ambassador of Yemen Republic in Lebanon, Mr. Fayssal Amin Abu Ras, representing the Yemeni Government, signed this afternoon the agreement on the special arrangements for the UN-ESCWA 25th Ministerial Session, to be held on 26-29 May in Sana’a. قال اليوم السفير بدر عمر الدفع، وكيل الأمين العام للأمم المتحدة والأمين التنفيذي للجنة الأمم المتحدة الاقتصادية والاجتماعية (الإسكوا)، إنّ اللجنة تُولِـى اهتماماً خاصاً لقطاع الطاقة ودعم ِ دورِهِ في تحقيق التنمية المستدامة، كما تحرصُ على تقديم ِ الدعم ِ الفنىّ لدولِها الأعضاء والعمل ِ على تحقيق التعاونِ الإقليمي في هذا المجال. وتزدادُ أهمية ُ هذه القضية في ظل الارتفاع ِ المطـّّرد لأسعار الطاقة وضرورةِ التصدّي لمشكلة التغيّرات المناخيّة والحدِّ من التلوث البيئي. |

UN-ESCWA Executive Secretary on Official Visit to the Kingdom of Bahrain |
UN-ESCWA Executive Secretary, Bader Omar AlDafa, today undertook an official visit to the Kingdom of Bahrain, where he met with a number of senior officials, on top of whom was Crown Prince and General Commander of Bahrain’s Defense Force Sheikh Salman Bin Hamad Bin Issa Al Khalifa. Talks focused on the many facets of cooperation with UN-ESCWA, as well as advisory and technical services on which UN-ESCWA and the Government of Bahrain collaborated in the past year. |

UN-House in Beirut to Host a UN-ESCWA Regional Workshop on DevInfo |
UN-ESCWA considers that there is an urgent need for member countries to enhance their capacities in compiling, disseminating and exchanging data and metadata. In this sense, the DevInfo statistical program provides the statistical community with a tool for effective working partnership among different data producers to facilitate exchanging a unified official statistics to relevant agencies and the regional commission in the region. |

Executive Secretary Participates in Dialogue for Regional Commissions |
With nine of its member countries accounting for some 56 and 30 per cent of oil and natural gas world supplies, the UN-ESCWA region is especially rich in these resources, said Executive Secretary Bader Omar AlDafa. At the same time, other member countries have little or no gas or oil reserves. Such disparities among and between countries of the region had kept average growth over the past two years at about 5.6 per cent. |
