Sultanate of Oman Provides Financial Support to UN-ESCWA Development Projects and Technical Cooperation Activities |
The Sultanate of Oman today provided UN-ESCWA with financial support of USD 50,000 to fund development projects and technical cooperation and support activities for member countries. The Sultanate is considered one of the most prominent supporters of UN-ESCWA in recent years since it has already provided funds that amounted to USD 300,000. |

UN-ESCWA to Hold Fifth Session of Technical Committee on Liberalization of Foreign Trade and Economic Globalization |
The Fifth Session of the UN-ESCWA Technical Committee on Liberalization of Foreign Trade and Economic Globalization will convene at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Beirut from 24 to 26 April 2007. The meetings will be attended by representatives of the ministries of trade and finance in member countries, in addition to representatives of relevant international and regional organizations as observers. |

UN-ESCWA to Discuss the Establishment of a UN Arabic Language Centre |
UN-ESCWA will hold an expert group meeting to consider the establishment of a United Nations Arabic Language Centre, at the Bristol Hotel in Beirut on 2 and 3 May 2007. The meeting, which is the first to be held on the subject, is intended to review key activities implemented by UN-ESCWA in this regard and decide on future activities to be organized in cooperation with the United Nations Secretariat. |

Economic and Social Developments in Western Asia for 2005-2006 |
UN-ESCWA has published the “Survey of Economic and Social Developments in Western Asia, 2005-2006”. The annual publication outlines a set of economic policy principles aimed at contributing to the design of development strategies in the region. The principles are employment-intensive, pro-poor and based on human rights. The Survey was completed before the conflict in Lebanon of July-August 2006. Consequently, some of the economic indicators set forth in this year’s publication, particularly with regard to Lebanon, will need to be revised in a subsequent issue. |

UN-ESCWA Ambassadors Meet Wednesday, Discuss the Commission’s Achievements and Future |
In their last meeting during the term of Executive Secretary Mervat Tallawy, the ambassadors of UN-ESCWA member countries will meet at 11 am on Wednesday 16 May 2007 at the UN House in Beirut. The meeting comes within the context of the regular Advisory Committee meetings and is the second for this year. Tallawy will open the meeting with a statement addressed to the participants and media representatives. |

Lebanese Minister of Economy and Trade Sami Haddad and Executive Secretary Mervat Tallawy will hold a press conference to launch the annual study prepared by UN-ESCWA entitled “Annual Review of Developments in Globalization and Regional Integration in the Arab Countries”. Cairo to Host UN-ESCWA Meeting on Regional Water Management |
Beirut, 27 July 2007 (UN Information Services)-- On 30-31 July 2007, Cairo will host a workshop organized by UN-ESCWA on “Evaluation and Adaptation of Existing Water Visions and Forecasts for Shared Aquifer Management in the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership Region (MEDA)”, which includes Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Syria, Tunisia, Turkey, and Palestine (Gaza and the West bank) at the Mena House Oberoi Hotel. Participants in the meeting, which will open at 10:00 am on Monday 30 July 2007, will be representatives of water management institutions in selected MEDA countries. |

New York-Beirut,30 July (United Nations Information Centre)--United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon announced today the appointment of Mr. Bader Al-Dafa of Qatar as Executive Secretary of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA). Mr. Al-Dafa has recently served as Ambassador of Qatar to the United States and Permanent Observer to the Organization of American States (OAS. In this capacity,he played a special role in promoting access to education and the arts in the Arab-American community and among other minority populations in the United States. |

Executive Secretary Takes Oath of Office before Secretary-General |
New York, Beirut, 13 August 2007 (United Nations Information Services)- United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon administered today the oath of office to Ambassador Bader Al-Dafa, following the appointment of the latter as Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of the Beirut-based Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (UN-ESCWA). The swearing-in ceremony organized for the occasion was attended by Deputy Secretary-General, Asha-Rose Migiro, Chef de cabinet Vijay Nambiar, and senior UN officials. |
