UN-ESCWA High-Level Meeting to Promote Water Supply and Sanitation Policies |
In cooperation with the German Technical Cooperation (GTZ) and in partnership with the League of Arab States (LAS), UN-ESCWA is holding a high level meeting to “Promote Water Supply and Sanitation Policies and Related Organizational Reforms in Western Asia”, on 15 June 2008 at the LAS Headquarters, Cairo, Egypt. The meeting will coincide with the second day sessions of the LAS Ministerial Meeting of Arab Ministers responsible for water resources. |

Negotiations and Dispute Resolution |
UN-ESCWA, in partnership with the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources of Germany (BGR) and in collaboration with the Ministry of Water Resources in Iraq, is organizing an Advanced-Level Seminar on “Negotiations and Dispute Resolution Over International Shared Water Resources in Iraq.” The meeting will take place on 29-31 July 2008 at the UN-House in Beirut, Lebanon. The objectives of this meeting are to encourage a comprehensive vision and strategy for international negotiations on shared water resources. |

Social Exclusion Debated at the UN House |
Who are the excluded groups in the ESCWA region and what makes them so? What is Social Exclusion? How is it different from poverty? Who does it affect and why? Questions that UN-ESCWA and a quorum of regional experts, academics and activists will attempt to answer this week, on 1-2 August at an expert group meeting on “Social Exclusion in the ESCWA Region: Determinants and Indicators”, to be held at the UN House, Beirut. |

UN-ESCWA Launches 2007 Report on Globalization |
UN-ESCWA Executive Secretary Bader Omar AlDafa said Thursday that Arab states have achieved uneven results in 2006 in globalization. “Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) into Arab states has reached a record score of USD$62 billion and an average growth of 36 percent. This growth reflects the efforts exerted by most Arab states to lure FDI,” AlDafa said during a press conference held at the UN-House on the occasion of launching the “Annual Review of Developments in Globalization and Regional Integration in Arab countries 2007”. |

The Sudan Joins UN-ESCWA |
The Sudan has recently acceded to the membership of the UN Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (UN ESCWA). The Commission has thus come to include 14 member countries. The accession comes in response to the request of the Sudan and the recommendation of the UN-ESCWA 25th Ministerial Session held in Sana’a, Yemen on 26-29 May 2008. |

UN Deputy Secretary-General in Beirut |
Beirut, 10 November 2010 (UN Information Services)-- UN Deputy Secretary-General Asha Rose Migiro arrived in Beirut this morning for a two-day visit. During her stay in the Lebanese capital, Migiro will take part in a regional meeting for coordination of the work of UN agencies and bodies in Arab countries. Migiro is scheduled to mee with Lebanese President Michel Sleiman, and with Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri, who will attend the UN regional meeting at the UN House in Beirut and will deliver a statement there. |

Migiro Opens Regional Coordination |
United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Asha-Rose Migiro will open the 12th Regional Coordination Mechanism (RCM) Meeting at 10:00 am on Saturday 13 September at the UN House-Beirut. In addition to Migiro, UN Under-Secretary-General and UN-ESCWA Executive Secretary Bader Omar AlDafa will deliver an opening statement at the meeting. |

UN Deputy Secretary-General Opens 12th Regional Coordination Mechanism Meeting; Says Arab Region Emerging as True Leader in Development |
UN Deputy Secretary-General Asha-Rose Migiro said on Saturday that the Arab region is emerging as a true leader in development – from burgeoning intra-regional investment in infrastructure to energy security. The Arab countries and people are doing more and more to contribute to one another’s’ development. “It is not an exaggeration to say that the Arab Region is one of vast historical and cultural richness. Today this wealth is, in many cases, complemented by economic prosperity,” Migiro said. |

Executive Secretary Opens Advisory Committee Meeting, Says Recent Developments Helped Restore Commission’s Activities |
UN-ESCWA Executive Secretary Badr Omar AlDafa said on Monday positive developments that took place in Lebanon since May, “helped in restoring our activities in the state of UN-ESCWA headquarters because meetings, conferences, seminars and other activities that used to exceed 100, had stopped or been transferred to other countries because of the security situation”. |
