Major Issues on International Economic Agenda Focus of UNCTAD-UNESCWA Workshop |
“The pace of globalization is accelerating, and in turn both the challenges and opportunities facing our member countries are increasing,” said UNESCWA Deputy Executive Secretary Atif Kubursi. “The situation in the current round of WTO negotiations is critical and it is very important that our member countries are best prepared for the upcoming deliberations,” he said. Kubursi was speaking at the opening today of a three week training course at the UN House, Beirut, in cooperation with the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). |

An Expert Group Meeting on “Development Under Crisis Conditions” opened yesterday that is being hosted by UNESCWA in cooperation with the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung Institute at the UN House, Beirut. The meeting, which is taking place from 27 to 28 June 2006, is enhancing development efforts in this often unstable region by bringing together expertise and stakeholders to address the causes and effects of conflict in the region. |

Meeting Concludes With Recommendations for Future Development Efforts in Western Asia |
UNESCWA concluded an Expert Group Meeting (EGM) on Development Under Crisis Conditions that was held at the UN House, Beirut, from 27 to 28 June 2006 in which experts from the United States, Europe and the Arab world discussed the causes and effects of conflict and political tensions in the region, documented best practices, and made recommendations for future development efforts in Western Asia. |

Role of Foreign Aid in Development of the Arab Region |
UNESCWA is organizing a seminar on the Role of Foreign Aid in Development of the Arab Region on Wednesday, July 12, 2006, at the UN House, Beirut. This comes as part of the Commission’s process of disseminating information and soliciting feedback on pressing developmental issues in the UNESCWA Region. It aims at providing a comprehensive analysis of the impact that development aid can have on achieving internationally agreed-upon development goals, such as the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), in the Arab region. |

Judges Are Briefed on UNESCWA Programmes and Activities |
Thirty-five judges paid a visit to the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (UNESCWA) today to learn more about the UN organization, its history, mission, and structure. The student group was greeted by the Deputy Executive Secretary of UNESCWA, Mr. Atif A. Kubursi, who briefed them on the UN, specialized agencies, and programmes, as well as specific UNESCWA programmes. |

UNESCWA and International Organization for Migration Sign Cooperation Agreement |
In parallel with the Economic and Social Council meetings taking place in Geneva this week, a ceremony was held to sign a cooperation agreement between the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (UNESCWA) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM). The agreement was signed by Executive Secretary Mervat Tallawy on behalf of UNESCWA, and by Director General Brunson McKinley on behalf of IOM. |

UNESCWA to back Egypt in National Population and Housing Census |
In support of the United Nations 2010 World Program of Population and Housing Censuses, adopted by the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) in its resolution 2005/13, and under the patronage of the Prime Minister of Egypt, Mr. Ahmed Nazif, the United Nations Economic and Social commission for Western Asia (UNESCWA), is holding a national seminar on “Population, Housing and Establishment Censuses in the Context of Development" on 30-31 July 2006 at Conrad-Hotel, Cairo. |

LBCI Condemns Attacks Over Transmission Facilities |
UNESCWA Executive Secretary Mervat Tallawy today received a letter by the Lebanese Broadcasting Corporation International (LBCI) condemning the Israeli attack over the station’s transmission sites, which took place on 21 July 2006, and resulted in “killing one of its employees manning one of these facilities and injuring 2 others.” The Corporation asked Tallawy to transmit its condemnation to international references. |
