Executive Secretary Reiterates Call for Immediate Cease Fire |
Commenting on the aggression today to which the UN House in Beirut was exposed, UNESCWA Executive Secretary Mervat Tallawy said, “we understand the feeling of the Lebanese people after several civilians fell due to strikes over the Qana village early this morning, which recalls the tragedy that hit this village in 1996.” She added, “We appreciate the intervention of the Lebanese authorities at the highest level to provide protection to the UN headquarters in Beirut and stress Lebanon’s need of the United Nations and UNESCWA. |

UNESCWA to Document Effects of Military Operations on Lebanon |
UNESCWA Executive Secretary Mervat Tallawy said that the Commission’s Unit for Conflict Related Issues (ECRI) was documenting the effects of the military operations on Lebanon in order to serve as a practical reference to any future work for rehabilitation and re-construction in the country. Tallawy was speaking this morning to the UN Information Services when she also underlined that the work program was ongoing as planned before the recent crisis has ravaged the country. |

Participants in the UNESCWA seminar on “Population, Housing and Establishment Censuses in the Context of Development" held in Cairo on 30-31 July 2006 under the patronage of Egyptian Prime Minister considered that the implementation of the census is Egypt was an important opportunity to be used in indicating the effects of population issues over development and the future needs in Egypt not only at the national and provincial levels. |

UNESCWA-GTZ Meeting on Regional Water Utilities Opens |
UNESCWA Executive Secretary Mervat Tallawy said that by 2015, it is projected that 82 million people in the Arab world will lack access to safe water and 124 million people will not be able to get basic water treatment utilities if urgent measures are not taken to improve the present situation. Tallawy was speaking at the opening of a technical cooperation meeting held by UNESCWA and German Technical Cooperation (GTZ) at the Conrad Hotel, Cairo, from 4 to 6 September 2006 under the aegis of Egyptian Minister of Housing, Utilities and Urban Development Ahmed Al Maghraby. |

Ambassadors of UNESCWA Countries to Meet Thursday Discussions will focus on Commission’s Activities and Support to Lebanon |
In their first meeting after the end of war on Lebanon, the ambassadors of UNESCWA member countries will meet at 11am on Thursday 14 September 2006 at the UN House, Beirut. This meeting comes within the context of the regular Advisory Committee Meetings and is the second for this year. UNESCWA Executive Secretary Mervat Tallawy will open the meeting with a statement addressed to the participants and media representatives. |

Executive Secretary Resumes Duties at Official Beirut Headquarters, Hopes Lebanon Reconstruction Occurs Within National Vision and Plan |
UNESCWA Executive Secretary Mervat Tallawy today expressed a wish to see the reconstruction of Lebanon take place within the framework of a national vision and plan that covers all segments of Lebanese society and of a developmental rather than a humanitarian nature.
