About ESCWA |
The five regional commissions were created by the United Nations in order to fulfil the economic and social goals set out in the Charter by promoting cooperation and integration between countries in each region of the world. Those commissions are: the Economic Commission for Europe (ECE, established in 1947); the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP, 1947); the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC, 1948); the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA, 1958); and the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA, 1973). |

Water |
Securing water for sustainable development is crucial. Nearly all member countries suffer from freshwater scarcity, with 18 out of 22 Arab States below the water poverty line of 1,000 m3/person/year. Salinity affects surface and groundwater resources, particularly in agricultural areas and above coastal aquifer systems where most of the Arab region’s population is concentrated. |

Energy |
The energy sector is the main driver of vital importance for the economic and social development in the ESCWA member States. Indeed, access to modern energy services is a prerequisite for achieving most economic and social development goals including improving people’s welfare. |

Climate change |
The Arab region contributes less than 5 per cent to global greenhouse gas emissions but is one of the most vulnerable to the potential ravages of climate change. In recent years, the region has suffered from rising average temperatures, leading to hotter summers and more frequent heat waves. |

Land and Food Security |
Food security lies at the heart of sustainable development. The Food and Environment Policies Section of the SDPD, in close cooperation with the League of Arab States, UNEP and other regional and international organizations, provides technical assistance to member States. |
