The energy sector not only contributes to the GDP of most ESCWA member States, it is also a key to social development. It is, however, characterized by unsustainable production and consumption patterns, and has an adverse impact on the environment.

The Energy Section of the SDPD sees energy sector sustainability as crucial and shares the vision of the United Nations Secretary-General’s global SE4All initiative: ensuring universal access to modern energy services; doubling the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency; and doubling the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix.

The Energy Section strives to help member countries to include social concerns, such as job and income creation and poverty reduction through the empowerment of women, in their energy plans. It provides training on energy resource management and systems; encourages the expansion of electricity grid interconnections and gas networks, and promotes regional energy cooperation mechanisms.
