ESCWA Technical Partner in Shaping KSA Tenth Five Year Plan |
On 20 and 21 May 2014, an ESCWA delegation headed by Senior Economist and Director of the Economic Development and Globalization Division Abdallah Al Dardari met with a group of senior officials in the Ministry of Economy and Planning in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), at the Ministry’s headquarters. Also participating in the meeting was Assistant Resident Representative at United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in KSA Mayssam Tamim. |

Dardari Meets Lebanese University Students |
On 4 June 2014, ESCWA Chief Economist and Director of the Economic Development and Globalization Division (EDGD) Abdallah Al Dardari called on a group of university students from the Economic Science And Business Administration Studies Faculty of the Lebanese University, Aley branch, to write an academic paper on gas production and its benefits in Lebanon, which would be discussed at ESCWA with a group of experts. |

Training in Sudan on Program Cycle Management and Project Proposal Writing |
Under the auspices of Sudanese Trade Minister Osman Omer Al-Sharif, and in cooperation with the Ministry, ESCWA delivered a 5-day intensive training workshop on Program Cycle Management and Project Proposal Writing, from 11 to 15 May 2014, in Khartoum. The training was delivered by ESCWA Regional Advisor on Social Policy Khaled Ayesh, and First Social Affairs Officer Naela Haddad. The ESCWA team also conducted the closing graduation ceremony for 31 officials from various Sudanese Ministries, in the presence of State Minister for Foreign Trade Jehad Hamzeh. |

Arab Integration: A 21st Century Development Imperative |
Upon the invitation of the Beirut-based Carnegie Middle East Centre, a group of Arab thinkers discussed on 17 June 2014 the flagship report produced by ESCWA and entitled “Arab Integration: A 21st Century Development Imperative” at the Phoenicia Intercontinental Hotel, Beirut. Following an introduction by Senior Associate at the Carnegie Middle East Centre Maha Yahya, the meeting opened with the statements of United Nations Under-Secretary-General and ESCWA Executive Secretary Rima Khalaf, and former Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora. |

The intervention of His Royal Highness Prince El Hassan bin Talal, the president of Higher Council for Science and Technology and the leadership of Her Royal Highness Princess Sumaya bint El Hassan, the president of the Royal Scientific Society and President of the Board of Governors of the Amman-based ESCWA Technology Centre (ETC), marked the Centre's 3rd Technical Committee Meeting, which was held on 2-3 June 2014 at the Society's headquarters. |

Stand to Mourn the Deaths of Innocent Civilians and Fellow Staff Members |
On 7 August 2014 The ESCWA Staff Council convened in front of the United Nations House in Beirut a stand to protest the deaths of innocent civilians and of fellow staff members in Gaza. The UN flag flew at half mast in front of the UN House. |

Syrian Conflict Impact on Macro-economy and Millennium Development Goals |
On 10 September 2014, ESCWA launched from its Beirut headquarters a report entitled "The conflict in the Syrian Arab Republic: The impact at the Macroeconomic Level and the Obstacles on the Way to the Millennium Development Goals." A host of Arab and foreign diplomats and experts took part in the event. Also participating was the Editor-in-Chief of As Safir newspaper Talal Salman who delivered a keynote address. |

ESCWA 28th Session Opens Senior Official Segment |
On 15 September 2014, the 28th Session of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) opened in the Tunisian capital at the senior officials’ level. Opening statements were delivered by the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which chaired the ESCWA 27th Session, and which was represented by Undersecretary of the Economic Policies Affairs at the UAE Ministry of Economy Muhammad Saleh Al Shalwah, and by ESCWA Deputy Executive Secretary Nadim Khouri. |

Arab Dignitaries and Senior Officials Take Part in ESCWA 28th Ministerial Session |
On 17 September 2014, Arab ministers and senior regional and foreign officials took part today in the opening of the 28th ministerial session of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), a key regional event hosted by the Tunisian government, and held under the patronage of the President of the Republic, Mr. Moncef Al Marzouki. In the opening session, Arab and foreign diplomats and senior officials listened to statements that echoed Arab concerns and aspirations towards a better tomorrow guided by social justice. |
