Civil Society Dialogues: Exploring New Frontiers – Egypt’s Transition |
In light of the sweeping changes in the Arab region, ESCWA has launched a series of civil society dialogues entitled: "Exploring New Frontiers". These dialogues aim to take stock of the transition that Arab countries are going through and discuss the changing role of civil society and the emerging challenges and windows of opportunity. They are also intended to discuss the process of institutionalizing new citizen participation frameworks, and ensuring social cohesion. |

ESCWA and League of Arab States Usher a New Era of Cooperation |
26 June 2013 saw the mutual signing at LAS headquarters in Cairo, of a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) by the Executive Secretary of ESCWA, Ms. Rima Khalaf, and the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States (LAS), Mr. Nabil Al Arabi. The new MoU aims to develop and build on decades of cooperation between ESCWA and LAS, which has grown progressively since the signing of the original MoU between the two organizations in 1983. |

Two-Decade ESCWA-BGR Project Concludes |
After 21 years of cooperation, ESCWA and the German Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) marked the official end of their mutual project on the management of water resources in the ESCWA region, on 8 July 2013. The project team met one last time in the presence of the representative of the Embassy of Germany in Beirut Hanan Abu-Rida, and staff from different ESCWA divisions. BGR is the central scientific authority providing advice to the Federal Government of Germany and to the private sector in all geo-related issues. |

PALESTINIAN PEOPLE CONTINUES TO BEAR BRUNT OF OCCUPATION |
On 19 July 2013, ESCWA Director of the Emerging and Conflict-Related Issues Division Tarik Alami presented to the UN Economic and Social Council the Note of the Secretary-General on the economic and social repercussions of the Israeli occupation on the living conditions of the Palestinian people in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and the Arab population in the occupied Syrian Golan, which is prepared by ESCWA on yearly basis. |

The 'Inventory of Shared Water Resources in Western Asia' Launched in Stockholm |
ESCWA and the German Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) launched the Inventory of Shared Water Resources in Western Asia on 3 september at the World Water Week in Stockholm. This publication is the first effort led by the United Nations to comprehensively identify and assess the state of transboundary surface and groundwater resources in the Middle East, and was prepared in close consultation with ESCWA member countries as well as regional and international experts. |

Jordanian Capital Hosts Eighth Session of Technical Committee on Liberalization of Foreign Trade, Economic Globalization and Financing for Development in the Countries of ESCWA Region |
The Jordanian capital, Amman, hosted the Eighth Session of the Technical Committee on Liberalization of Foreign Trade, Economic, Globalization and Financing for Development in the Countries of the ESCWA Region from 7 to 8 October 2013. Attending the Session meetings were representatives of ministries of finance, ministries of economy, and central banks of member countries. Also present were representatives of relevant regional and international organizations. |

ESCWA-Rotary Launch Report on Arab MDGs |
The project is of great benefit to secondary school and university instructors and students, and promotes joint cooperation between ESCWA, Rotary clubs in Lebanon, the Lebanese Ministry of Education and Higher Education and the Social Sciences Institute of the Lebanese University. It is the Arab Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) Report 2011, which was launched at the UN House on 10 October 2013 in the presence of Arab and foreign diplomatic delegates, educational personalities as well as Rotary members. |

ESCWA Convened the Fourteenth Session of its Committee on Transport |
The Jordanian Capital, Amman, hosted the 14th Session of its Committee on Transport on 9 and 10 October 2013. Minister of Transport in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan Lina Chbib inaugurated the meeting, which was attended by specialists in diverse transport and legislation-related areas from ESCWA member countries, alongside representatives of several relevant regional and international bodies. |

CAMRE Welcomes Cooperation with ESCWA |
The Council of Arab Ministers Responsible for the Environment (CAMRE) welcomed ongoing cooperation with ESCWA during its 25th Session, held at the Headquarters of the League of Arab States (LAS) on 7 November 2013. Participating in meeting was Director of the ESCWA Sustainable Development and Productivity Division Roula Majdalani. In particular, ESCWA had cooperated with LAS in holding a workshop on the Regional Training Workshop on Capacity Development for Climate Change Negotiations for the Arab Countries in Jordan, on 22-24 October 2013. |
