East and West Embrace in ESCWA Concert |
Music lovers flocked to the Maronite Cathedral of St. George in Downtown Beirut, Lebanon, last week to attend a special classical concert held on the occasion of the 35th Anniversary of ESCWA. The Commission’s Executive Secretary, Bader AlDafa, and the German Foundation Podium Junger Musiker had jointly extended the invitation to a concert entitled “Orient Meets Occident: the Arabian Passion according to J. S. Bach.” |

ESCWA holds regional workshop on Arabic Domain Names and Internet Governance |
ESCWA is organizing a regional workshop on Arabic Domain Names and Internet Governance on 14 November 2009 at the Savoy Hotel in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt. The meeting tackles important topics related to the Arabic domain names in general and the “.arab” top-level domain, which will be established in 2010, in addition to issues associated with critical Internet resources and cyber security. |

ESCWA holds an open forum during IGF-IV |
Deneme ESCWA is organizing an open forum on “Internet Governance: Challenges and Opportunities for the ESCWA Member Countries” during the fourth meeting of the Internet Governance Forum. The Forum is held on 17 November 2009 from 14h00 until 15h30 in Room 8 – Citadel, Maritim Jolie Ville Royal Peninsula Hotel in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt. The forum will officially launch a comprehensive study entitled “Internet Governance: Challenges and Opportunities for the ESCWA Member Countries” tackling major issues related to Internet governance from the Arab region perspective. |

ESCWA and the World Bank Seek to Promote Intra-Mashreq Trade |
ESCWA and the World Bank held a joint high-level workshop on Thursday 18 March, where they presented the findings and recommendations of a study entitled “Regional Cross-Border Trade Facilitation and Infrastructure for Mashreq Countries”. Opening statements were delivered by Lebanese Minister of Finance Raya Hassan, ESCWA Executive Secretary Bader AlDafa, and World Bank Director for the Middle East Department, Hedi Larbi. |

ESCWA Holds Eleventh Session for Transport Committee Under the Auspices of Lebanese Minister of Transport |
ESCWA is convening the 11th session of its transport committee on Monday 22 March 2010 at the UN House, Beirut, to facilitate trade and transport and achieve regional integration. The session is held under the auspices of Lebanese Minister of Transport Ghazi Aridi. The Session will be inaugurated at 10:00 AM, and continue until Wednesday 24 March. Opening statements will be delivered by Aridi or his representative, ESCWA Executive Secretary Bader AlDafa, and Palestine representative Mahmoud Khaled, in his capacity as the former chairperson of the session. |

Transport Issues Debated in ESCWA |
Transport officials today affirmed the importance of unifying transport legislation among Arab countries and removing obstacles to the movement of goods and people in this region. Officials were speaking at the 11th Session of the ESCWA Transport Committee, held under the auspices of Lebanese Minister of Transportation, Ghazi Aridi. |

ESCWA Concludes Transport Committee with Calls to Harmonize Legislation |
ESCWA Transport Committee adopted today the proposal for the formation of a working group on the harmonization of institutional frameworks and legislation in the transport sector in the ESCWA region. Transport officials of ESCWA’s 14 member countries adopted this proposal at the 11th Session of the ESCWA Transport Committee, which was held on 22-24 March under the auspices of Lebanese Minister of Transportation, Ghazi Aridi. |

ESCWA Report Highlights Disparities in Information and Communication Technology |
ESCWA shed light in a report it launched Tuesday on the state of the Information Society in the Arab region, emphasizing the great disparities that exist among countries in the region in this sector. Entitled “Regional Profile of the Information Society in Western Asia – 2009”, the report disclosed an increase in literacy in this region, while also noting that half of all Arab women still suffer from illiteracy. |
