National Conference on Social Policy in Egypt Kicks off |
The National Conference on Integrated Social Policy in Egypt opened today at the Pyramisa Hotel in Cairo under the auspices of the Egyptian First Lady, Ms. Suzan Mubarak. Speaking at the opening session were Mr. James Rawley, UN Resident Coordinator in Egypt and Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Ms. Mervat Tallawy, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (UN-ESCWA) and Mr. Ali Al-Meselhi, Egyptian Minister of Social Solidarity. |

Under the patronage of Egyptian Transport Minister Mohammad Mansour, UN-ESCWA is set to hold an “Expert Group Meeting Towards the Implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding on Maritime Transport Cooperation in the Arab Mashreq: The Role of Governments and Private Sector in Activating Shipping Traffic and Application of Information and Communication Technology in the Seaports of UN-ESCWA Member Countries” from 12 to 14 February 2007 at the Ramses Hilton Hotel, Cairo. |

UN-ESCWA and Alcatel-Lucent to Launch a Study on Broadband for Development |
UN-ESCWA, represented by the Chief of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Division Youssef Nusseir, and Alcatel-Lucent, represented by Vice-President Thierry Albrand, will hold a press conference at the Jordanian Ministry of Information and Communication Technology in Amman at 12:30 pm on Wednesday 28 February 2007. This press conference is intended to launch a joint publication entitled “Broadband for Development in the UN-ESCWA Region: Enhancing Access to ICT Services in a Global Knowledge Society”. |

Jordanian Minister of Information and Communication Technology to Open an UN-ESCWA Workshop Next Monday |
Jordanian Minister of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Basem Rousan will open the UN-ESCWA Workshop on “Establishing Public Private Partnerships (PPP) for Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Initiatives” hosted by the Ministry of ICT (MoICT) in Amman from 26 February to 1 March 2007. The workshop, which will open at exactly 09:30 am next Monday, will be organized in cooperation with the Jordanian MoICT, the Global Knowledge Partnership (GKP), and the Institute of Public Private Partnership (IP3). |

The main objective of short-term economic forecasting is to assess economic conditions and use this as a guide to the necessary policies required for preserving economic activity at the highest sustainable level. |

UN-ESCWA Executive Secretary Mervat Tallawy met yesterday with Director General of the Arab Industrial Development and Mining Organization (AIDMO) Mohamed Bin Youssef. The aim of his visit was to discuss the strengthening of cooperation between AIDMO and UN-ESCWA as well as the possibility of signing a new comprehensive and qualitative agreement on the close cooperation between the two organizations that began in the 70s in the area of industrial development and mining. |
