Regional Meeting for the Computation of Preliminary PPP Results |
Given the important uses of purchasing power parities (PPPs) in the formulation of economic policies and in monitoring Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Western Asia has been working towards the regular production of PPPs by constructing a continuous annual PPP time series and establishing the International Comparison Program (ICP) as a permanent element within the regular statistical work programs, an initiative which has granted the region a leading position within the global ICP community. |

Policy Response to the Socio-Economic Impact of the Covid-19 Epidemic: Social Protection |
On 11 March 2020, WHO announced that Covid-19 outbreak can be characterized as a pandemic. Although the epicenters of the pandemic are currently in the United States and Europe, majority of Arab countries are heavily affected by the virus. In the region, impacts of the Covid-19 crisis are expected to be devastating given prevalent poverty and informality, conflicts and displacement, shrinking oil revenues as well as other factors. |

The first phase of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS), held in Geneva during 10-12 December 2003, adopted a Declaration of Principles (DoP) and a global Plan of Action (PoA), setting the stage for international cooperation to close the existing digital divide between developing and developed countries while involving all stakeholders in building an inclusive information society. |

Regional consultation meeting on estimating the cost of Violence Against Women |
The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (UN-ESCWA), the Arab States Regional Office for the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women), and the Swedish Institute in Alexandria held regional consultations on estimating the economic cost of violence against women, on 24 and 25 October 2017, at the Swedish Institute in Alexandria, Arab Republic of Egypt. The regional consultations were organised for Arab National Women Machineries and National Statistics Offices in the Arab region. |

National Consultative Workshop on the Implementation of Beijing +25 |
ESCWA Centre for Women organised a two-day national consultative workshop, on 10-11 April 2019 in Riyadh, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, in cooperation with the Family Affairs Council, to prepare the national review on the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action after 25 years. |

Sendai Framework Monitoring and National Disaster Loss Accounting System and Linkage of Climate Change and Disaster Risk Reduction for Iraq |
The workshop, organized by ESCWA in partnership with UNISDR aims to strengthen national capacities in data collection, entry and analysis on Sendai Framework Monitor and Disaster Loss Accounting System (DesInventar) in order to prepare the national report for Iraq on Disaster Risk Reduction. The Workshop was attended by 16 senior experts from 11 different institutions and ministries (Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Industry, Ministry of Planning, Ministry of Oil, Ministry of Construction and Housing, Ministry of Transport, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Water Resources, Ministry of Electricity, Ministry of Agriculture and Ministry of Interior). One of the participants from the Ministry of Environment was also the focal for climate change and vulnerability assessment. This group of experts represents part of the National Disaster Risk Reduction Committee of Iraq which is mandated to cope with Disaster Risk assessment, preparedness and recovery plans. |
