Event Type:

The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (UN-ESCWA), the Arab States Regional Office for the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women), and the Swedish Institute in Alexandria held regional consultations on estimating the economic cost of violence against women, on 24 and 25 October 2017, at the Swedish Institute in Alexandria, Arab Republic of Egypt. The regional consultations were organised for Arab National Women Machineries and National Statistics Offices in the Arab region. They provided a tailor-made economic model for costing violence against women, which was developed following the first phase of a regional project implemented by ESCWA and UN Women to generate evidence-based knowledge, in-depth understanding and contextualization of the human rights and socioeconomic consequences of violence against women in the Arab region.
During the Regional Consultations, participants had the opportunity to learn more on costing of violence experiences from Sweden, Peru and Egypt, as well as the recent experience of Palestine in developing an operational plan for the implementation of a costing model in their upcoming survey on violence.
