Social Inclusion and Disability

Persons with disabilities constitute one of the largest and most marginalized social groups in the Arab region. They have limited access to education, social protection and work, and are at greater risk of health problems and poverty than other social groups. The lack of data on disability in the region makes it difficult to address their needs, and the problem is compounded by the violence affecting much of the region.

Although 17 member countries of ESCWA are States parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, much remains to be done to harmonize legislation with the Convention and effect real change in the lives of persons with disabilities.

ESCWA works to encourage implementation of the Convention, the introduction of appropriate policies, and cooperation between Governments, regional organizations, civil society and representative organizations of persons with disabilities.
