Housing and Urban Development

Adequate housing is central to a decent life, and is recognized as such in several international human rights instruments. Without proper housing, access to other necessities, such as adequate food and water, clothing, medical care, physical protection, education and employment may be compromised.

The Arab region suffers from an acute shortage of affordable and adequate housing for the poor and middle-income classes. Population density and migration, as well as social and cultural considerations, contribute to the problem.

ESCWA aims to help Governments in the region through analysis, discussion and implementation of successful housing policies.
