Students of Aarhus University Visit ESCWA, Get Briefed on Economic Challenges in the Region |
A group of students from the University of Aarhus (Denmark) visited ESCWA today and learned about its objectives and programmes. The students were briefed on the role of ESCWA, as one of the United Nations Regional Commissions, and the opportunities and challenges facing the region. |

AUST Students Visit ESCWA, Learn about its Objectives and Programmes |
A group of students of different majors from the American University of Science and Technology (AUST) visited ESCWA on 19 May 2012, where they learned about the Commission’s objectives and programmes. Chief of ESCWA Social Participatory Development Section (SPDS) Maha Yahya briefed them on the role of ESCWA as one of the United Nations Regional Commissions and the opportunities and challenges facing the region. She focused on regional priority agenda items and the Commission’s work with civil society organizations. |

Information Economy Report Launched at ESCWA, Said Facebook Users Reached 481 Million |
By the end of 2011, online social network Facebook users reached 481 million, demanding an expansion in software industry, as mentioned in the Information Economy Report 2012 released by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). Entitled “The Software Industry and Developing Countries,” the Report was launched by ESCWA today 28 November 2012, at its Headquarters in Beirut. |

Engaging citizens is an imperative for the post-2015 Development Agenda in the Arab region |
After an intensive discussion at the UN House, international and regional experts as well as senior government officials agreed that engaging citizens in attaining national development agendas is an imperative. Over 35 participants attended the meeting organized by UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) and ESCWA, from 3 to 6 December 2012, in Beirut. Taking cue from their governments at the Rio+20 Summit this June, the participants agreed on the importance of governance and the inclusion of socially vulnerable groups in achieving sustainable development. |

Magida El-Roumy at ESCWA |
Because economic and social development would not be achieved without the human and artistic aspect, ESCWA today received Lebanese renowned diva Majida El-Roumy who got briefed on the the Regional Commission and its work. From ESCWA Headquarters El-Roumy called for giving the youth adequate importance "because they are the future and the crucial means for change." She also invited young generations to consider refined arts as a part of sustainable development. El-Roumy began her visit at with an audience with UN Under-Secretary-General and ESCWA Executive Secretary Rima Khalaf. |

ESCWA Participates in UNFCCC/COP 18 |
In line with ESCWA mandate to follow-up on progress of international conventions and provide support to Member Countries in implementing and meeting their commitments to international goals and agreements, the Commission participated in the 18th Session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the 8th session of the Conference of the Parties serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol, held in Doha, Qatar (COP18/CMP8) on 26 November-7 December 2012. |

Science, Technology and Innovation to Promote Development |
UN Under-Secretary General and ESCWA Executive Secretary Rima Khalaf said that technology is the practical application of knowledge and the most important to produce optimal outcomes in all the interrelated areas of development. She said that the UN has always been a global player in promoting and harnessing technology for development, noting that by 2015, 50 per cent of world population will be connected online. |

ESCWA Chief Economist Launches World Economic Situation and Prospects 2013, Reiterates Commission's Call to Achieve Regional Integration |
Abdallah AlDardari, Director, ESCWA Economic Development and Globalization Division and Chief Economist, today said Economic situation of the Arab region can be characterized by its polarizing economic performance between major energy exporters and other Arab countries. Major energy exporters, mainly of GCC countries, have registered a stable growth with constantly growing domestic demand through active fiscal policy. On the other hand, political instability and social unrest clouded economic situation of other Arab countries, namely Mashreq, Maghreb and Arab Least Developed Countries. |
