ESCWA Holds Conference on Green Industries |
ESCWA today opened a conference on “The Role of Green Industries in Promoting Socio-Economic Development in the Arab Countries” at the UN House in Beirut. The conference is held under the patronage of Lebanese Minister of Industry Freije Sabounjian, and is organized in cooperation with the Arab Industrial Development and Mining Organization (AIDMO). |

ESCWA Technical Committee on Trade Liberalization Meets in Beirut |
Under the patronage of Lebanese Minister of Economy and Trade Nicholas Nahhas, the Technical Committee on Liberalization of Foreign Trade, Economic Globalization and Financing for Development in the Countries of the ESCWA Region opened today its seventh session. ESCWA Holds Arab Region Preparatory Meeting for Rio+20 Conference |
Cairo, 16 Oct 2011 (UN Information Service) - The UN Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) today opened the Arab Regional Preparatory Meeting for the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio +20), which will be held in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, 4-6 June 2012. The 16-17 Oct meeting is held at the League of Arab States (LAS) headquarters in Cairo and was organized in cooperation with LAS and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP). |

Reviewing Arab Development Patterns, Creating Sustainable Development Bodies Urged |
Cairo, 17 Oct 2011 (UN Information Service) — Officials and experts participating in a meeting of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) called for seizing the opportunity of political and social changes of the Arab Spring to review adopted patterns of development with a view to addressing sustainable development challenges in the Arab region. Participants agreed that failures in achieving development is mainly attributed to developed countries’ evasion of their obligations towards developing ones, as provided for in international conventions. |

ESCWA Opens Reform and Transition to Democracy Meeting |
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon called on those who believe in a future of freedom and dignity to come together and help people of the region and their leaders to write the next chapters. He said that from the very beginning of these revolutions, from Tunisia through Egypt and beyond, he has called on leaders to listen to their people, a call that some heeded and benefitted while others did not, and today are facing the storm. "I say again to President Assad of Syria: Stop the violence. Stop killing your own people. The path of repression is a dead end," he demanded. |
