The International Year of Forests, 2011 Celebrating Forests for People Forests are essential renewable resources that are important for the survival and wellbeing of people around the World. They provide shelter, food and medicine to people and are a major habitat for biodiversity. They provide clean water and play a vital role in maintaining a stable climate and preserving the environment, to name a few. In order to highlight the important role of forests, the United Nations General Assembly declared 2011 as the International Year of Forests. |

ESCWA Marks World Water Day |
As is customary since 1993, the United Nations celebrated World Water Day on 22 March. In Lebanon, ESCWA marked the day through a seminar held at the UN House in Beirut under the theme: “Water for Cities: Responding to the Urban Challenge.” Lebanese Minister of Water and Energy Gebran Bassil gave patronage to the event, which was co-organized by the Association of the Friends of Ibrahim Abdel Al (AFIAL) and the German Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR). |

Expert Group Meets on Gender Mainstreaming |
On 29 and 30 March 2011, ESCWA held an Expert Group Meeting on “Mainstreaming Gender in the Plans and Programmes of the Ministries of Labour in Selected ESCWA Member Countries” at the UN House in Beirut. The two-day meeting was a follow-up to a workshop on gender mainstreaming and organizational change for participants from labour ministries and national women machineries in six member countries - Bahrain, Kuwait, Lebanon, Palestine, Qatar, Sudan and Syria - that was organized in August 2010. |

ESCWA holds Fifth Meeting of Technical Committee |
ESCWA Secretariat convened the fifth meeting of the Technical Committee at the UN House in Beirut on 6 and 7 April. Statements were delivered by Undersecretary-General and ESCWA Executive Secretary Rima Khalaf and by Chairman of the fifth session of the technical committee, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan Saleh Al-Kharabsheh. |

UN Staff Highlight Successes at Beirut Lions Ceremony |
Chapters of the world-famous Lions Clubs in Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq held a ceremony in Beirut on 12 April to honor the UN System in Lebanon on the occasion of the “UN Lions Day” where representatives of three UN agencies boasted of achievements of their organizations before a large audience of ministers, ambassadors, Lions members, UN staff and others. |
