UN Report: Arab Region Behind in Disaster Risk Reduction |
A United Nations report launched in Beirut today said governments of the Middle East and North Africa region were lagging behind global averages in reducing disaster risks. The 2011 UN Global Assessment Report on Disaster Risk Reduction (GAR11) was launched Wednesday in its Arabic version at the UN House in Beirut by ESCWA and the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR). ESCWA Deliberates Millennium Development Goals in the Arab region |
ESCWA held an Expert Group Meeting on 19 and 20 July, to discuss the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in the Arab region, as part of a report to be published on the subject later this year. The meeting discussed regional priorities, different forms of partnerships for development through trade and finance integration, cooperation on water management, labour migration and food security issues. |

UN Launches World Investment Report 2011 in Beirut |
Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) flows to the ESCWA region dropped by 15 per cent between 2009 and 2010, settling on 57 billion USD from the former 67 billion USD. Save for Oman and Lebanon, this drop affected all ESCWA countries. Lebanese Agriculture Minister Opens ESCWA Workshop on Sustainable Agricultural Production |
ESCWA today held a workshop on “Voluntary Sustainability Standards (VSS) to promote sustainable agricultural production, food quality and safety, environmental protection and trade in the Arab Region,” at the UN House in Beirut. The workshop was organized in cooperation with the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) and under the patronage of the Lebanese Minister of Agriculture Hussein Al Hajj Hassan. |
