The United Nations is marking this year's World Environment Day under the title: “Think, Eat, Save”. In Beirut, ESCWA is organizing a roundtable in cooperation the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the Food Establishments Recycling Nutrients (FERN) International at 10 am on Wednesday, the 5th of June 2013 at the UN House, Riad Solh Square, Beirut.

Kuwait will be hosting the ninth session of the ESCWA Committee on Energy on 12-13 June at Regency Hotel, Kuwait. The Session will kick off on Wednesday 12 June at 10:00AM with the participation of representatives from member countries specialized in the field of Energy. Election of officers will follow in accordance with the Arabic alphabetical order employed by the United Nations, whereby Libya will assume the chairmanship of the session, Lebanon and Egypt the vice-chairmanship and Morocco the rapporteur.

Director of ESCWA Sustainable Development and Productivity Division Roula Majdalani today said that much can be done to increase energy efficiency in most Arab countries, which, in coming years, will suffer from the dangers of falling short of meeting the increased demand for power that will rise by 115 percent during the years 2011-2020. Majdalani was speaking at the opening of the Ninth Session of ESCWA‘s Committee on Energy at the Regency Hotel, Kuwait. The Committee concludes tomorrow Thursday, and is attended by specialized representatives of ESCWA Member States.

Tapping into a yet unexplored area, the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) is holding a meeting on “Economics of middle class in the Arab region,” on 28 and 29 June 2013 in Sofitel El Gezirah Hotel, Zamalek, Cairo.
