To what extent do Arab legal systems facilitate women’s access to justice? |
The ESCWA Centre for Women (ECW), in partnership with the Human Rights Institute of the Beirut Bar Association, is organizing the next meeting of its Gender Discussion Series (GDS), to be held under the title: To what extent do the legal systems in Arab countries facilitate access to justice for women? The meeting is scheduled to take place on Friday 6 June 2014 at 2:00 PM, on the premises of the Beirut Bar Association located at “Beit Al-Mouhami” in Adlieh - Mathaf area. |

ESCWA Presents Latest Report on Palestine, Condemns Civilian Loss of Life in Gaza |
On the occasion of delivering a Secretary-General report in the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) today condemned the targeting of civilian structures and the killing of civilians in the ongoing military operation in the Gaza Strip. The Commission expressed its grave concern vis-à-vis this escalation, specifically the violations of international humanitarian law, in addition to the economic, social and humanitarian consequences which exacerbate the suffering of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. |

The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) joined the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) in condemning in the strongest terms the shelling of the Jabalia Elementary Girls’ School on Wednesday, 30 July 2014. The targeted UNRWA-run school was a United Nations-designated shelter in Gaza and a safe haven for 3,300 civilians who had sought refuge there under the banner of the United Nations and international law. |

Libyan Conflict and its Impact on Egypt and Tunisia |
Following the Libyan parliamentary elections held in June 2014 and the inability of the Government to extend its authority beyond Tripoli, in addition to the political instability and intensified armed violence around the capital city of Tripoli and the second largest city of Bengazi, the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) produced a note to examine the economic situation in Libya and review the main challenges the Libyan economy is facing. |
