58 Arab Figures Echo ESCWA’s Initiative, Condemn Violence against Women |
By initiative of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) on International Women’s Day, 58 Arab figures from various intellectual backgrounds today decried violence against women in an appeal that they signed, cognizant of the challenges faced by women in the process of democratic transition in the Arab region. It was circulated in member countries undergoing political transition (Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Tunisia and Yemen) as well as in the ESCWA host country, Lebanon. Committee on Water Resources Holds 10th Session, Discusses Regional Water Cooperation |
In light of the challenges and obstacles confronting the Arab region in the area of integrated water resources management, and since the General Assembly of the United Nations has declared 2013 as the International Year for Water Cooperation, ESCWA convenes the 10th session of its Committee on Water Resources on 20-22 March under the theme “Regional Water Cooperation” at the UN House, Beirut. Participants will include representatives of ESCWA Member Countries, and from relevant international and regional organizations and institutions, and civil society organizations. |

ESCWA Committee on Water Resources Concludes 10th Session |
The Tenth Session of ESCWA Committee on Water Resources concluded its deliberations on 22 March, coinciding with the International Water Day, with the adoption of over 24 recommendations submitted to member countries and the Commission’s Secretariat, which support “Regional Cooperation in the Field of Water Resources”, the slogan of the Session. |

Growth in Arab Region to Taper Off, Says Chief Economist on Launching ESCAP Study on Macroeconomic Policies for Development |
ESCWA Chief Economist and Director of the Economic Development and Globalization Division (EDGD) Abdallah Al Dardari, said today that modest growth prospects of the Asia-Pacific economies will impact Arab economies through inter-regional economic and social linkages, which became crucial for the Arab region’s development. He added that economic growth of the Arab region will taper off in 2013, as no strong demand growth for natural resources will be seen in the near future. |

ESCWA Facilitates Exchange of Environmental Knowledge between Palestine and Tunisia |
ESCWA Regional Advisor for Environment and Water Ralf Klingbeil said today that Tunisia and Palestine will benefit from the exchange of information on their national approaches to environmental management through the activities, which ESCWA has planned at the Tunisian Ministry of Environment from 22 to 26 April 2013. Speaking to the ESCWA Communication and Information Unit (ECIU) of this mission, Klingbeil noted, “We expect to enhance direct cooperation between both countries in a number of fields. |
