ESCWA, Lebanese Council for Women Mark International Women’s Day

On the occasion of the International Women’s Day, celebrated every 8 March by the United Nations system, and under the umbrella of “Beirut World Book Capital”, the Lebanese Council of Women (LCW) - in cooperation with ESCWA and the Lebanese Ministry of Culture – is holding a series of activities on 8-10 March 2010 at UNESCO Palace, Beirut.

The activities begin with the official inauguration of a book fair entitled “Writings of Women and About Women”, at 3:30 PM on Monday 8 march 2010. Opening statements include the speech of Lebanese Minister of Culture, Salim Wardeh, the message of the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, delivered by UN Information Centre Director Bahaa Elkoussy, and speeches by Head of the LCW Amane Kabbara Shaarani, and the Coordinator of the Beirut World Book Capital, Leila Barakat.

Other activities include a seminar entitled "Creative and Scholarly Writings by Arab Women", which will be held at 3:30 PM on March, 9th 2010. The seminar is a part of a three day event, including a book exhibition to celebrate the International Women's Day. Participating in the seminar are female writers Leila Atrache (Jordan), Iqbal Baraka (Egypt), Anissa Abboud (Syria), Fatima Yousuf Al Ali (Kuwait). The seminar is moderated by Iqbal Al Shayeb Ghanem, Head of the LCW Cultural Committee.
