It sometimes happens that the proportional numbers lying in certain strata are known but that it is impossible to identify in advance the stratum to which a chosen member belongs. The sample selection then has to be made without reference to the strata, e.g. by simple random sampling. The resulting sample may, however, be stratified after selection and treated as an ordinary stratified sample. The procedure is almost as efficient as sampling with a uniform sampling fraction.
