إذا كانت كلمة "تعداد" تعني النظر في حالة كل فرد في مجتمع ما، فالتعداد السكاني هو بالتالي تعبير متعارض بحد ذاته. لكن إذا كانت كلمة "تعداد" تشير إلى نوع المواد المجمعة، فعندها يمكن استخدام عينة.
