Definition:
A sample which is selected by stages, the sampling units at each stage being sub-sampled from the (larger) units chosen at the previous stage.
The sampling units pertaining to the first stage are called primary or first stage units; and similarly for second stage units, etc.

عينة يجري اختيارها على مراحل مختلفة، مع العلم أن وحدات المعاينة في كل مرحلة هي عبارة عن شبه عينات مأخوذة من الوحدات (الأكبر) المنتقاة في المرحلة السابقة.
تُسمى وحدات المعاينة المتعلقة بالمرحلة الأولى: الوحدات الأولية أو، وحدات المرحلة الأولى. والأمر سيان بالنسبة لوحدات المرحلة الثانية. الخ.
