Advancing Water and Food Security in a Climate Change Context |
The project that is funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) is led by ESCWA. It will be responsible for coordinating and managing project implementation and reporting. ESCWA is also responsible of ensuring that the preparation and implementation of the project outputs are appropriately communicated to the regional initiative partners and associated regional mechanisms. This Project aims to enhance water and food security under changing climate conditions by informing, advising and facilitating the engagement of national governments, local communities including women and youth in climate action. This will be pursued by enhancing policy coherence across the water and agricultural sectors through institutional mechanisms and the provision of informed policy guidance and risk analysis, expanding the local knowledge base though science-based assessments and analysis of climate impacts on strategic sectors, and empowering diverse communities through applied capacity building initiatives, pilot projects and policy forums to help the Arab region become more water secure, food secure and climate resilient. |

Cairo, 17 Oct 2011 (UN Information Service) — Officials and experts participating in a meeting of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) called for seizing the opportunity of political and social changes of the Arab Spring to review adopted patterns of development with a view to addressing sustainable development challenges in the Arab region. Participants agreed that failures in achieving development is mainly attributed to developed countries’ evasion of their obligations towards developing ones, as provided for in international conventions. |

Implementing Institutional Gaps Assessment Methodology in Iraq (at Al-Hamdania district and Nineveh Governorate): Phase II |
This workshop will review the outcome of the assessment methodology based on the amended questionnaire, and the challenges and priorities that emerged in the deliberations of the first workshop; It will incorporate the Governorate institutions in the Gaps Assessment Process for a more accurate evaluation; It will evaluate the process that led to the Al-Hamdania district’s strategic plan of 2019-2020, against the strategic plans developed at the Governorate level and at the Federal level with the objective of reviewing actual coordination and complementarity among the different governance levels; and select trainers from among the participants to train them later in applying the institutional gaps assessment methodology in the Al-Anbar and Saladin governorates.
