Executive Secretary to Attend Sustainable Development Forum and Take Oath of Office |
United Nations Under-Secretary-General and ESCWA Executive Secretary Mohamed Ali Alhakim headed to New York to take part in the High Level Political Forum (HLPF) on Sustainable Development held between 10 and 19 July 2017 and other side-line events. Alhakim is also scheduled to meet a score of UN officials and the Arab Group at the level of the Permanent Representatives to the United Nations. |

ESCWA ES meets Lebanese Minister of Women Affairs |
During last Friday visit paid by ESCWA Executive Secretary Mohamed Ali Alhakim to the Lebanese Minister of State for Women's Affairs Jean Ogassapian, the two sides discussed the possibility of setting a framework aimed to increase the technical cooperation provided by ESCWA. The two sides also agreed on launching a first model of a national strategy against Gender Based Violence (GBV) that ESCWA will implement in partnership with the ministry and in cooperation with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Lebanon. |

The impacts of the introduction of value added tax in Gulf Cooperation Council countries |
The idea of creating a value added tax in GCC countries is a recurrent idea that re-emerged with insistence recently. Indeed, the budgetary difficulties that GCC countries are facing in the aftermath of the 2014’s oil price chock convinced them to reform of their existing tax systems. In this regard, this study attempts to assess the economic and fiscal implication of the implementation of a 5 percent value added tax in six GCC countries. |

An economic outlook for the Arab region by 2025 |
ESCWA has conducted a study evaluation on the effects of joint industrial policies in Arab countries based on modern economic models. The study resulted in concrete recommendations through the adoption of reasonable and achievable policies that lead to economic prosperity. |
