The Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) and the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) are jointly organizing a workshop on Conference Diplomacy on 25 January 2010 at the UN House in Beirut. The workshop is open to members of Permanent Missions accredited to Lebanon as well as representatives of ESCWA member states who will be participating in the 4th Meeting of the Technical Committee (26-27 January 2010). The objective of this workshop is to familiarize participants with the underlying concepts and notions of Conference Diplomacy.

Serbia has diverse energy supplies, but energy generation largely relies on lignite. The country also started a process of aligning its energy policies with EU directives, which requires important improvements in the country’s sustainable energy management.

While many efforts have been exerted to build the statistical capacities of ESCWA member countries, the use of statistics in policymaking requires further development, with special focus on tackling shortfalls in statistical processes and their role in public policy formulation and monitoring.

United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of ESCWA Mohamed Ali Al-Hakim paid on 2 August 2017 a courtesy visit to former Lebanese President Amin Gemayel in his office in Bikfaya. Al-Hakim took over his functions at the helm of ESCWA last May.

The two officials discussed collaboration between ESCWA and Lebanon in addition to the economic and social cooperation activities carried out by the Commission in the region. They also discussed the National Agenda for the Future of Syria program initiated by ESCWA over three years ago.
