Since the 1995 Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, the United Nations has increasingly focused on “gender mainstreaming”, that is, ensuring that the concerns of women and men are equally reflected in policymaking and programmes.



UN-ESCWA is inviting applications for a call for proposals on Promoting Renewable Energy (RE) Investments in the Context of Climate Change Mitigation and Sustainable Development. All institutions, civil societies and the private sector of member countries are invited to submit their proposals by 1 March 2016, to be included in the ESCWA RE investment projects pipeline. At least 10 projects will be retained as part of a capacity building project the Commission is implementing, which aims at enhancing RE investments in member countries in the context of climate change mitigation.

The fifth issue of the Annual Review, aimed at researchers and academics, analyses the degree to which the Arab economies have integrated into the global economy and the progress made in the Arab regional integration process. It provides policymakers with a set of recommendations on how best to proceed, both in terms of globalization and regional integration. Following thorough analysis, the principal conclusion of the review is that, in 2005, Arab countries made further progress in terms of both regional integration and integration into the global economy.

This study aims to find common ground between Governments and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) for the implementation of the Convention to Eliminate All Forms of Discrimination against Women in Arab countries. It discusses ratification of the Convention by the Arab countries and analyses the reservations they have made thereto. It also reviews the mechanisms used to monitor and follow up implementation of the Convention by countries and civil society organizations and presents practical recommendations concerning the main strategic stages in implementing the Convention.
