Food Security and Nutrition |
The Arab region faces a number of structural challenges to food security and nutrition. These include high population growth rates, a limited natural resource base, especially with regard to land and water, the impact of climate change and the heavy reliance of international markets on food imports. The region also has a relatively high prevalence of undernourishment, caused by nutrient deficiencies and is relatively unique in the sense that obesity and the problems associated with it are on the increase. |

Governing and Advisory Bodies |
The ESCWA intergovernmental machinery consists of the Commission as the highest body within the organization and, reporting to it, the subsidiary bodies of the Commission, which are the legislative and consultative committees. Pursuant to resolutions 158 (XIV) of 5 April 1987 and 196 (XVII) of 31 May 1994, the Commission sits once every two years, in even years. Since 2006, sessions have been convened in two segments, a high officials segment and a ministerial segment. |

International Migration |
In order to co-ordinate efforts on international migration and displacement and to ensure that these efforts are complementary and mutually-reinforcing, agencies in the United Nations system have begun to create structures to ensure global and regional collaboration on migration-related work. The Working Group on International Migration in the Arab Region, co-chaired by UN-ESCWA, the League of Arab States and the International Organization for Migration, brings together 19 participating agencies: |
