The Seventh Session of UNESCWA Committee on Transport will convene at the UN House, Beirut, on Monday 17 April 2006 at 10:00 a.m. under the auspices of Lebanese Minister of Public Works and Transport Mohammed Safadi. The meeting will continue until 19 April and discuss major issues that concern the transport sector due to its importance and its direct impact on the economies of the countries in the region.

UNESCWA Executive Secretary Mervat Tallawy said that the Commission’s Unit for Conflict Related Issues (ECRI) was documenting the effects of the military operations on Lebanon in order to serve as a practical reference to any future work for rehabilitation and re-construction in the country. Tallawy was speaking this morning to the UN Information Services when she also underlined that the work program was ongoing as planned before the recent crisis has ravaged the country.



Within the framework of advisory services provided by ESCWA to member countries, the Commission contributed with the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR) in the preparation and finalization of the concept note and project proposal for a new groundwater research project. This project aims at enhancing the knowledge and skills of stakeholders in the water sector to formulate policies, implement programmes and develop institutional frameworks aimed at promoting integrated management of water resources.
