Workshop on Turnover Indices |
ESCWA organized a training workshop on turnover indices on 22-24 May 2017, in Muscat, Oman. The workshop was conducted in collaboration with the Statistical Center of the Gulf Cooperation Council States (GCC-Stat) and the National Center for Statistics and Information in the Sultanate of Oman (NCSI). It was held in the context of implementing the activities under the project “Strengthening the Statistical Capacity of ESCWA Member Countries in Producing and Disseminating Short-term Economic Indicators for Sustainable Growth”. |

Our Land, Our Home, Our Future! |
In his first public appearance since his appointment as Executive Secretary of ESCWA Mohamed Ali Alhakim pondered on the ordeals of displacement and migration that have had an impact on more than ten million people across the Arab region. According to him, these ordeals have a negative impact on environmental challenges just as they are affected by them. Moreover, they have aggravated the lack of balance in the distribution of populations and jeopardised economic, social, and ecological situations in many countries. |

Lebanese President and Speaker Receive Executive-Secretary |
Lebanese President Michel Aoun received on Wednesday 21 June 2017 United Nations Under-Secretary-General and ESCWA Executive Secretary Mohamed Ali Alhakim in a courtesy visit shortly after he assumed office on top of the Commission. President Aoun praised the work conducted by ESCWA for the sake of the Member States. For his part, the Executive Secretary voiced his gladness that Lebanon is hosting ESCWA and stressed that it is the only UN regional and international organisation headquartered in Lebanon. |

Executive Secretary visits former Prime Minister |
ESCWA Executive Secretary Mohamed Ali Alhakim paid a visit on 5 July 2017 to Lebanese former Prime Minister Tammam Salam. Alhakim was accompanied by his Deputy for Programme Support Khawla Mattar. Discussions revolved around the general situation and developments in Lebanon and the region. The officials also discussed the role of ESCWA in supporting economic and social development policies in Member States. |

Regional Experts Discuss Water-Energy Nexus at ESCWA |
ESCWA hosts on 11-12 July 2017 a score of water and energy experts from Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Mauritania, Oman, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, The Sudan, The Syrian Arab Republic, Tunisia, and Yemen, to take part in a regional capacity-building workshop on “Water-Energy Nexus Operational Renewable Energy” held at the UN House in Beirut. |
