Workshop on Civil Registration and Vital Statistics for ESCWA region |
The civil registration system is considered the best source for generating accurate, reliable and timely vital statistics. Not all national civil registration systems are fully in place in terms of coverage of vital events, effectiveness and their linkage with national statistical systems, thus preventing their use for producing reliable vital statistics. Consequently, alternative data sources such as censuses and sample surveys are then used to obtain these statistics. |

The stakeholder analysis produced a strategic view of relevant stakeholders in the selected post-conflict countries, including line ministries, local authorities and civil society organizations, and identified all primary and secondary stakeholders who have a vested interest in the issues in which the project is concerned. |

The report was prepared jointly by ESCWA staff and experts working on UN-ESCWA’s National Agenda for the Future of Syria Programme. The event will commence with a presentation of the report, which is divided into the following three sections: - The economic impact of the conflict in Syria; The presentation will be followed by a discussion by a group of economists and development experts. The Commemoration of 2016 International Women's Day |
In observation of the international women’s day in 2016, ESCWA organized four events to commemorate the day under the global theme of “Planet 50-50 by 2030: Step it Up for Gender Equality”. The first event was held in partnership with the Institute for Women’s Studies in the Arab World (IWSAW) at the Lebanese American University (LAU). The commemoration was held on Thursday 10th of March 2016 with the presence of social, academic, and representatives from the diplomatic crops, international organizations and civil society. |

The Arab region is witnessing demographic changes characterized by a persisting youth bulge coupled with a fast increase in the numbers and proportions of older persons referred to as “population ageing”. This reality has increased the challenges faced by Arab countries to address the needs and priorities of older persons and ensure them a dignified life. |
