Arab Forum "Towards a New Welfare Mix: Rethinking the Roles of the State, Market and Civil Society in the Provision of Basic Social Services" |
Provision of affordable and quality social services such as health, education and social protection is a key concern in Arab countries. Provision of these services has traditionally been considered as the domain of the State. However, this has been subject to change globally and in the Arab region. Increased privatization efforts and technical as well as regulatory innovations have enabled non-state actors to contribute to the provision of basic social services. Some countries in the region have deliberately designed policies to allow private participation in some social sectors. |

Workshop on MDG Monitoring |
Since the Millennium Summit in 2000, countries and international agencies have been compiling data to monitor progress towards the MDGs. The availability and quality of the data at the international and national levels is however not the same. The UN Statistical Commission has called attention to the need of reducing these discrepancies, and countries worldwide have pointed out the importance of assessing progress at sub-national levels and better explore national sources. |

This meeting will be held in accordance with the ETC Statute to give guidance to the Centre on its work program for 2019 based on the outcome of the 30th ministerial session and key regional technological priorities that relate to its work, as well as to identify countries’ priorities and challenges in harnessing national capabilities in science, technology, and innovation in the implementation of the sustainable development goals.

Technology and innovation for land transport development in the Arab region |
The meeting discussed the draft of the ESCWA study on the role of technology and innovation in developing land transport in the Arab region. The meeting also discussed the proposed recommendations to enhance the needed enabling environment for better deployment of technology and innovation in the land transport sector.

Mainstreaming SDGs into national policies requires designing institutional based and process oriented frameworks that help stakeholders to define gaps and prioritize actions to achieve positive change right across the 2030 Agenda. Agriculture and food sectors are main contributors to several SDGs with numerous targets. Sustainable agriculture and nutritious food drive economic growth and healthy life mainly in rural areas, protect natural assets, and offer inclusive livelihoods for vulnerable communities. |

EGM on Development Under Crisis Conditions |
The Expert Group Meeting on “Development Under Crisis Conditions” (Beirut, 27-28 June 2006) aimed at reaching a common understanding of the impact of conflict on socio-economic and political development in the region. It also sought to identify means of assisting member states in pursuing their Millennium Development Goals despite instability and political volatility. The meeting examined comparative experiences with development implementation under crisis conditions in three locales: Iraq, the Palestinian Territories, and Lebanon. |
