A Push to the Green End |
Within the context of the ESCWA-lead project on "Strengthening National Capacities in the ESCWA Region on Developing Green Production Sectors", which officially kicked off in April 2012, three Green Help Desks (GHDs) have been established and are currently operational in Oman (September 2012), Lebanon (June 2013), and Jordan (August 2013). The GHDs are respectively hosted by the Omani Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the Association of Lebanese Industrialists (ALI), and the Royal Scientific Society (RSS) in Jordan.

الإمارات العربية المتحدة تستضيف إطلاق مسابقة "تفكر رقمياً ؟ ابتكر عربياً!" |
أُطلقت مسابقة المحتوى الرقمي العربي في الإمارات العربية المتحدة يوم 10 نيسان/أبريل 2014، وذلك من خلال تعاون الإسكوا وجامعة أبو ظبي وغرفة تجارة وصناعة أبو ظبي. وقد تم إطلاق المسابقة في إطار ورشة عمل استضافتها غرفة أبو ظبي للتوعية بأهمية صناعة المحتوى الرقمي العربي، وحضرها أكثر من خمسين مشارك مثلوا القطاع الأكاديمي، والمؤسسات المانحة، والقطاع الخاص المعني بتطوير المحتوى الرقمي العربي، فضلاً عن عدد من رواد الأعمال الشباب وطلاب الجامعات. |

ESCWA and the International Renewable Energy Conference |
Investment in alternative energy offers a range of benefits, not only for energy security or environmental considerations but also for the socio-economic gains they can generate. Renewable energy global demand continues to rise, contributing an estimated 19% of global final energy consumption in 2011. Renewables constituted more than 26% of global generating capacity and contributed an estimated 21.7% of global electricity, while creating an estimated 5.7 million jobs for people working directly or indirectly in the renewable energy sector in 2012. |

Water, Energy and Food Security in the Region: A Nexus Approach |
The American University of Beirut-affiliated Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs held a seminar on "The Nexus Approach: The Road to Water, Energy and Food Security in the Arab World" on 22 January 2014. ESCWA was represented by Regional Advisor for Environment and Water issues, Ralf Klingbeil, who delivered a presentation on "Food Security, Water Security, Improved Food Value Chains for Sustainable Socio-economic Development". |

ESCWA Marks World Water Day 2014 |
To mark World Water Day 2014, ESCWA cooperated with the Association of the Friends of Ibrahim Abdel Al, the Association of Lebanese Industrialists (ALI) and the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in holding a seminar entitled "The Water-Energy Nexus: Issues and Challenges", on 21 March, at the Order of the Press in Beirut. |

مسابقة "تفكر رقمياً ؟ ابتكر عربياً!" |
يستمرّ قبول طلبات المشاركة بمسابقة المحتوى الرقمي العربي حتى الثلاثين من الشهر الجاري. ففي إطار التعاون القائم بين الإسكوا ووزارة الاتصالات وتكنولوجيا المعلومات المصريّة ممثلة بمركز الإبداع التكنولوجي وريادة الأعمال، تمّ إطلاق مسابقة المحتوى الرقمي العربي تحت شعار "تفكر رقمياً؟ ابتكر عربياً!" في 2 آذار/مارس 2014 من ضمن فعاليّات ورشة عمل حول صناعة هذا المحتوى ضمّت ممثلين عن الجهات الحكوميّة والقطاع الخاص، بالإضافة إلى الشركات الناشئة ورواد الأعمال من الشباب وخريجي الجامعات. |

First Arab States Regional South-South Development EXPO |
The first Arab States Regional South-South Development Expo was held on 18 to 20 February 2014, hosted by the State of Qatar and co-organized by the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation and the United Nations Development Programme Regional Bureau for Arab States. The Expo bore the motto “Solutions to Action”. The main objective of the Expo was to serve as a platform for matching capacities of the solution providers with the needs of the solution seekers, which will potentially lead to practical exchanges of South-South solutions and experiences in the region. |

ESCWA Hub to NetMundial |
ESCWA hosted a regional hub for remote participation in the Global Multistakeholder Meeting on the Future of Internet Governance, known as "NetMundial", on 23-24 April 2014 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. This activity enabled ESCWA team working on the Arab Internet Governance Forum (Arab IGF) and experts from the Arab region, active in the Arab IGF process, to participate remotely in the event through a live connection with the event in Brazil. |

Towards a National Legislative Framework to Protect Women and Girls against All Forms of Violence |
On 17and18 June 2014, the National Council for Women (NCW) in Egypt hosted ESCWA’s Regional Advisor for Women’s Issues Wafa Al Dika Hamze, First Social Affairs Officer at the ESCWA Centre for Women (ECW) Lana Baydas, and Egyptian Legal Advisor Ahmad El Naggar in an advisory mission, which included a workshop entitled “Towards a National Legislative Framework to Protect Women and Girls against All Forms of Violence” organized by the NCW and the Egyptian Ministry of Justice in cooperation with ESCWA, UN-Women regional Bureau for Arab States and the Cairo based United Nations Office for Drugs |

ESCWA Participates in the 59th ISI World Statistics Congress |
On 26-30 August 2013, Hong Kong witnessed an important event: the 59th International Statistical Institute World Statistics Congress. Represented by its Statistics Division, ESCWA contributed to the scientific sessions and participated in a technical panel.
