In October 2002, following WSSD, the mandate of the mechanism was extended to cover the five key sustainable energy issues, identified by the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development, and renamed as the Regional Promotional Mechanism for Sustainable Energy Systems (RPMSES). The RPMSES became the first of its kind in the Arab region that is concerned with promoting regional cooperation in the field of energy for sustainable development.
