Defined as water that moves from the land surface or unsat-urated zone into the saturated zone, aquifer recharge is vitally important for understanding the hydrologic cycle as well as for applications to water-resource management. The definition used here excludes saturated flow between aquifers so it might be more precisely termed “aquifer-system” or “saturated-zone” recharge.
