The Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (UN-ESCWA), holds an expert group meeting on “The Social Policy Report II: From Concept to Practice”, on 17 January 2008 at Le Meridien Hotel in Amman, Jordan.

The meeting opens at 09:00 AM on Thursday 17 January bringing together around 20 regional and international experts from universities, international and regional organizations, research centers, and media representatives. Participants will review the first draft of the report, which is part of the Integrated Social Policies (ISP) Project launched by UN-ESCWA in 2002. Over the past five years, UN-ESCWA has issued a number of reports and country profiles and held national meetings and conferences in Bahrain, Egypt and Sudan to analyze, debate and assist governments in shaping the parameters of social policy. This report, the second in a series, comes as the ISP project enters its operative phase, and is designed to serve as an advocacy tool providing practical direction for social policy makers and practitioners in the region.

The meeting seeks to review and validate the draft Social Policy Report II by international and regional experts. Participants will provide UN-ESCWA with their inputs and comments prior to finalization of the report. In addition, the participants will give input to the follow-up plan of action, commenting on proposals for activities related to the launch of the report and its promotion in the region.

UN-ESCWA is one of the five UN Regional Commissions. It is comprised of 13 member countries: Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen. Its objective is to support economic and social cooperation among the countries of the region and promote the development process in order to achieve regional integration.
