The Social and Economic Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) organized a training workshop on Environment Statistics and Database that was hosted by the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) from 2 to 4 November, 2010 in Khartoum. The training was funded from the Development Account Project “Strengthening National Capacities in Environment Statistics, Indicators and Accounts in support of progress toward achieving the internationally agreed development goals in the ESCWA and ECLAC Regions”. Thirty officials from the Central Bureau of Statistics, the ministries of environment, water and irrigation, industry, petroleum, mineral resources, agriculture, health, Wilayat Al-Kahrtoum, the environment research institute, the remote sensing center, and the University of Khartoum. The training focused on the data collection and methodologies for water and waste statistics, air pollution, land cover/land use and biodiversity statistics. The system for environmental economic accounting for water (SEEAW) on the supply and use tables was also presented. ESCWA provided CBS with two laptops equipped with ESCWA Statistical Information System (ESIS), a database that allows compilation and reporting of environment and water statistics as well as customized social and economic indicators. Recommendations were made on organizing environmental data that is highly scattered in the different departments and on establishing coordination mechanism through strengthening the role of the higher council for environmental and the establishment of a coordination committee on environment statistics with the CBS as main player in official environment statistics.
