ESCWA, United Nations Statistics Division in New York (UNSD) and OPEC prepared for the Workshop on Energy Statistics in ESCWA Member Countries. Experts from the Economic Commission for Europe participated in this workshop and the Seminar on Energy Reserves/Resources Classification in OPEC countries. Representatives of ESCWA member countries were invited to participate in this workshop, and 10 member countries were represented. Two participants from Iran, an OPEC member country, participated as well. The main objectives of this event are to familiarize member countries with principles of United Nations Framework Classification (UNFC), to agree on the appropriate methods of energy data collection and to reach a common ground concerning definitions and methodologies in the field of energy statistics. The final goal is the establishment of energy database designed to facilitate the task of decision-making. Participants agreed that member countries ought to start applying a unified system for energy statistics, and that there is a need to establish an official national authority responsible of the regular collection and periodic dissemination of energy data. International and regional organization will be in charge of encouraging the Joint Oil Data Initiative (JODI) related to oil in the interest of member countries. It was also recommended that a Plan of Implementation of UNFC be elaborated for ESCWA/OPEC member states.
