Intersecretariat Working Group on Environment Statistics (IWG-ENV), Work Session on Water Statistics
The sectoral statistics team participated at the Intersecretariat Working Group on Environment Statistics (IWG-ENV), Work Session on Water Statistics in Vienna, 20-22 June 2005, organized by the IWG-ENV members (The United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD), the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the Statistical Office of the European Communities (Eurostat), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN-ECE) together with the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, the UNEP GEMS/Water programme and hosted by the Umweltbundesamt (Austrian Federal Environment Agency). This special Work Session on Water Statistics looked in-depth at the need for water statistics at international level and how best to meet this need in the preparation of the second World Water Development Report and UNEP''s fourth Global Environment Outlook (GEO-4). The team provided a paper on the "Status and Needs of Water Statistics in the ESCWA region" mainly focusing on the scarcity problems in the ESCWA region and the needs for data quantity and quality on water resources and consumption in the region and ESCWA activities and projects to build capacity of member countries in water sector and the need to continue on capacity building in this area of major importance in the ESCWA region.
