UN Staff Highlight Successes at Beirut Lions Ceremony |
Chapters of the world-famous Lions Clubs in Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq held a ceremony in Beirut on 12 April to honor the UN System in Lebanon on the occasion of the “UN Lions Day” where representatives of three UN agencies boasted of achievements of their organizations before a large audience of ministers, ambassadors, Lions members, UN staff and others. |

Costing Violence against Women |
On 25 and 26 January 2017, ESCWA convened a meeting to discuss a study it is drafting on the “Status of Arab Women,” with particular emphasis on violence against women. The two-day meeting gathered prominent experts from the region and beyond representing civil society and UN entities working on the subject matter. Hosted at the UN House in Beirut, the meeting fell within the scope of the ESCWA project “Estimating the Cost of the Economic Impact of Violence against Women in the Arab Region” that is conducted in partnership with UN-Women. |

National Institutional Structures for the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities: Exploring the Implementation of Article 33 in the Arab Region |
This study is divided into four sections. The first reviews the three main provisions of Article 33 by outlining the structure, composition and functions of the main institutional frameworks for implementing and monitoring the Convention. Where possible, examples from other countries around the globe are provided to illustrate the implementation of Article 33 in practice. The second section reviews the current state of implementation of Article 33 in the Arab region. The authors use information collected from a questionnaire sent to member States of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA)to illustrate key regional trends regarding Arab countries’ institutional setups in relation to Article 33. Finally, the paper outlines potential opportunities and challenges for Arab States in implementing Article 33 and concludes with some recommendations for further improving government compliance with the Convention. |

Addressing the need to capitalize on available resources and manage them well under crises, UN-ESCWA's unit for Emerging and Conflict Related Issues (ECRI) organized a workshop entitled "Management of Water Provision under Crisis: the Case of Southern Lebanon", from 7 to 9 September in Zahle. |
