Best Practices and Tools for Increasing Productivity and Competitiveness in the Production Sectors: Assessment of Zaatar Productivity and Competitiveness in Lebanon |
The Arabic term zaatar designates a variety of aromatic perennial plants typically harvested from the wild, which generally belong to the Origanum, Thymus and other genera of the Lamiaceae (mint) family. The term zaatar is also used to designate the different herb mixes, which in addition to the zaatar herb, usually include such other traditional ingredients as grilled sesame seeds, sumac fruits (Rhus coriaria L.) and salt. Each country possesses its own zaatar mix recipe with specific proportions of ingredients. |

The publications include policy recommendations aimed at enhancing the capacity of policymakers in countries experiencing conflict to develop appropriate strategies and programs for the achievement of social and economic development goals in the region. |

Several factors contributed to the alleviation of the impact of the crisis on Arab countries, including the minimal dependency of non-oil producing economies, especially financial markets, on the global economy; and the flexibility acquired by major oil-producing countries from their cash reserves. This issue of the Annual Review examines the impact of the global financial crisis on the Arab economies. |

This is particularly relevant in countries affected by conflict in the ESCWA region due to the weak nature of the private sector and, therefore, the need for an increasingly responsible role of the State during the period of transition to a moreresilient and developed private sector. |

Assessment of Water Quality Management Practices in the ESCWA Region |
This study assesses water quality management practices in selected countries within the region and presents member countries with recommendations on the protection and sustainable use of scarce water resources. It examines the extent to which measures related to water quality management have been integrated into national strategies and/or integrated water quality management plans, and discusses the progress achieved towards meeting the Millennium Development Goals in terms of improving sanitation services. |
