10 January 2017	Achieving Social Justice in the Arab Region	During the ESCWA 29th Session held on 13-15 December 2016, ESCWA presented the guide that it is currently preparing to incorporate social justice principles into development plans in Arab countries. The guide aims to inform officials in charge of the formulation of policies and plans in Member States on how to integrate the social justice concepts and principles in their national development policies and plans and to explain the link between social justice and the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and of relevant international conventions.

14 January 2021	Capacity-Building Workshop of the Municipality of Chorbane on Planning, Management, and Finance	Within the framework of the “Regional Initiative for Promoting Small-Scale Renewable Energy Applications in Rural Areas of the Arab Region (REGEND)” project, the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), in partnership with the General Commission for Regional Development (CGDR) and the National Agency for Energy Conservation (ANME) in Tunisia, is organizing a capacity-building workshop of the Municipality of Chorbane on planning, management, and finance (diagnosis, participatory local planning, gender integration, administrative and financial management, and development of sources of finance, …). This workshop aims to build/enhance the knowledge and practical capacities of a group of participants that includes some members of the elected municipal council of the municipality of Chorbane (Governorate of Mahdia, Republic of Tunisia) and some of the administrative/financial staff of the municipality, in relation with the best mechanisms for diagnosis and participatory municipal planning while ensuring Gender inclusion. The workshop will provide participants with theoretical knowledge and practical experience regarding methods and techniques for mobilizing traditional and non-traditional funds, including international cooperation funding and grants, in particular in the fields of food, energy and water, through the adoption of modern training methods that integrate technical theoretical presentations and practical training through case studies and work groups.

The meeting will launch the first Gender Statistics Toolkit and eLearning module. The session opens at 10:00 AM on Tuesday 4 April 2017.

11 December 2014	Boosting Digital Arabic Content – new report examines challenges and opportunities	The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (UN-ESCWA) launched on June 13th 2014 a joint assessment study entitled "Digital Arabic Content". The launch was during the thematic workshop on "Digital Content for Inclusive Knowledge Society" that took place as part of the WSIS+10 High Level Event, held in Geneva. The report was launched amidst growing regional interest in digital content in general and digital Arabic content (DAC) in specific.

11 December 2014	Tallawy Heads First UNESCWA Advisory Committee Meeting After War, Says Bulk of Technical Cooperation Activities to Focus on Lebanon Assistance	The regular meeting of the UNESCWA Advisory Committee began with a word from Executive Secretary Mervat Tallawy saluting the Lebanese people who “persevered during the destructive war that raged on, inflicting death and displacement.” She also saluted the governments and Arab peoples who “rushed to assist Lebanon in its plight and provided whatever they could.”
26 January 2017	Internally Displaced Persons and Refugees in Iraq and the Requirements of the Sustainable Development Agenda 2030	Refugees and internally displaced persons are still ongoing crises in Iraq and in many countries in the Arab region, not only as a result to the armed conflicts, but also as economic and social challenges. These crises are burdening the affected Arab governments and societies from finding comprehensive solutions. The challenges and threats of the refugees’ crisis exceed the national levels, currently it is one of the most fundamental humanitarian crises at the international level. It grabbed the attention of most of the International organizations and governments, working together to draft resolutions and policies to subside this influx and its dimensions. Furthermore, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and mainly in the Goal 16, is considered among the most emphasized plans dealing with issues of refugees, immigrants, and internally displaced persons. In fact, refugees and internally displaced persons are not only the most vulnerable groups in terms of the basic needs; food, shelter, and medical healthcare, but they are also among the most marginalized groups. They suffer from exclusion, discrimination, and oppression, not only in the hosting country, but also in their own, posing the threat of fragmentation to the social fabric. Analyzing the reasons behind the problems of refugees and internally displaced persons in Iraq by using the approach of the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development and the Goal 16, will help us to assess the challenges and obstacles the refugees may face, to identify their scarcities, and to draft solutions. Using this approach will also allow us to settle the appropriate plans and frames needed, first to ensure integration to all refugees in the hosting community, and second to create the appropriate environment for the refugees to return to the areas they abandoned.
