Review of Information and Communications Technology for Development in Western Asia, Issue No.4 |
Noting the impact of ICTs on social and economic development, this issue presents the four different dimensions for the use of technology in employment creation. It also focuses on initiatives undertaken by ESCWA in that regard, and on projects being implemented in the Syrian Arab Republic and Yemen. Moreover, this Review highlights the major studies and activities carried out by ESCWA in that field, and emphasize the importance of developing the digital content industry in the Arab region. This issue addresses the preparations for and challenges of the second phase of the WSIS. |

Training on Negotiations and Dispute Resolution Over International Shared Water Resources in Jordan |
The Water and Environment Issues Team, Sustainable Development and Productivity Division at the UN Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (UN-ESCWA), in partnership with the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources of Germany (BGR), in collaboration with the Ministry of Water and Irrigation in Jordan, are organizing a training entitled "Negotiations and Dispute Resolutions Over International Shared Water Resources in Jordan." The training will be taking place at the Kempinski Hotel in Amman, Jordan from 12 to 17 June 2007. |

Inventory of Shared Water Resources in Western Asia |
This publication is the first effort led by the United Nations to comprehensively identify and assess the state of transboundary surface and groundwater resources in the Western Asia. It was prepared by ESCWA and the German Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) and was developed in close consultation with ESCWA member countries, as well as regional and international experts. |

A Standardization Framework to Promote an Enabling Environment for Arabic e-Services |
This study focuses on diverse standards used in developing e-services. It starts by mentioning the importance of e-services, and the role of standards in increasing its adoption. Then, it lists the main Standard Developing Organizations. Standards for specifying e-services are first described, especially those related to web service development, data encoding and exchange, electronic data interchange, and web service routing and addressing. The study also describes the main e-service security standards, main standard frameworks used for e-Business and e-Commerce applications. |
