Introducing Web Scraping in Price Data Collection |
The International Comparison Program (ICP) team at ESCWA’s has been exploring new techniques to enhance price statistics in the region by using technology and Big Data tools as a non-traditional data collection method complementing traditional data collection. This initiative aims to improve data quality, raise the frequency of data collection, reduce field visits and increase work efficiency by ensuring regular automated extraction of price data from online outlets for both CPI and ICP purposes. |

Social and Economic Situation of Palestinian Women |
This report reviews the status of women and girls in Palestine during the period of January 2011-June 2012, focusing on developments in the social, economic and political rights of women. The report highlights positive changes with implications for gender equality, such as the adoption of a cross-sectoral national gender strategy by the Palestinian Authority, the suspension of a number of legal provisions regarding honour killing and the accession of more women to decision-making positions. |

Sports for Development, Peace and Human Rights |
ESCWA Staff Council organized a ping-pong tournament in August, under the auspices of Executive Secretary Rima Khalaf. Fawzat Salloum of the Security and Safety Section and Naela Haddad of the Social Development Division won the final matches on the categories of men and women, respectively, and received their trophies from the Executive Secretary on 30 August 2012. |

ESCWA Technology Centre (ETC) hosted the sixteenth meeting of the “Industrial Research Centres’ Coordination Committee in Arab States” simultaneously with ESCWA Technical Committee’s meeting, in cooperation with the Arab Industrial Development and Mining Organisation (AIDMO). The meeting aimed to overcome the hurdles facing technology transfer and development, and to raise awareness on the significance of industrial research in order to achieve an advanced Arab industry. |
