Media Arrangements for the 27th Ministerial Session of ESCWA |
Beirut, 27 April, 2012 (ESCWA Communications and Information Unit)- The 27th Ministerial Session of ESCWA will be held on 9-10 May 2012 at the U.N. House in Beirut under the auspices of Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Miqati. High Level meetings preceding the Session will be held on 7-8 May, 2012. Within this context, ESCWA Communications and Information Unit (ECIU) kindly requests that all media institutions and reporters take the arrangements below into consideration in order to ensure maximum cooperation between ESCWA and the media. |

Participation and Social Justice on the Agenda of ESCWA’s 27th Session |
Beirut, 30 April, 2012 (ESCWA Communications and Information Unit)- The Arab Region is in search of a new development paradigm to ensure greater participation of the youth in economic and public life, focusing more on social justice and accountability. Thus, “The Role of Participation and Social Justice in Achieving Sustainable and Balanced Development” will be one of the main topics to be discussed in a ministerial round table during the ESCWA 27th Ministerial Session to be held under the auspices of Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Miqati on 9-10 May 2012. |

ESCWA 27th Session to Discuss Rio+20 Regional Preparations |
Beirut, 2 May 2012 (ESCWA Communications and Information Unit)- The 27th Ministerial Session of ESCWA will take place two months ahead of Rio+20, the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, to be held in June 2012 in Rio de Janeiro. The Conference will mark the 20th anniversary of the World Earth Summit that took place in Rio de Janeiro and the 10th anniversary of the United Nations Summit on Sustainable Development that took place in Johannesburg, South Africa. |

ESCWA 27th Ministerial Session to Discuss Vital Issues of Concern to the Region |
Beirut, 26 April 2012 (ESCWA Communication and Information Unit)-- The 27th Ministerial Session of ESCWA will be held on 9-10 May 2012 at the United Nations House in Beirut under the auspices of the Prime Minister of Lebanon, Mr. Najib Mikati, as the region witnesses drastic political, economic and social changes. In January, ESCWA held a high-level meeting entitled “Reform and Transition to Democracy”, which was opened by Prime Minister Mikati and United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. |

ESCWA Launches Cyber Legislation Directives |

House in Beirut to shed light on the results of the commission’s activities in the field of cyber laws. The importance of cyber legislation stems from its role in securing a regulatory and legal environment suitable for the flourishing of the Information and Communication technology (ICT) sector. |

Speakers at the opening were the Deputy Executive Secretary of ESCWA, Mr. Nadim Khoury, the Director of International Cooperation in the Jordanian Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation, Ms. Zeina Touqan, representing the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, which chaired the 26th Session, and the Executive Director of the Economic Policy Affairs in the Emirati Ministry of Economy, Mr. Mohamad Saleh Shalwah. |

Senior Officials Segment of Commission’s 27th Session Concludes, Accepts Tunisia as New Member |
Beirut, 8 May 2012 (ESCWA Communication and Information Unit)— The member countries of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) unanimously accepted the Republic of Tunisia as a member of the Commission, to be brought up to the United Nations Economic and Social Council for final approval. Meanwhile, member countries also welcomed each of Libya’s and Morocco’s requests to join ESCWA. This step final approval by the ministerial Session Wednesday and reviewing in the member countries’ capitals before a final decision is made. |
