ESCWA contributes to SHARAKA Conference |
Upon invitation from the Gulf Studies Program at the College of Arts and Science, Qatar University, ESCWA Regional Advisor on Environment and Water, Ralf Klingbeil, participated in the conference “EU-GCC Regional Security Cooperation - Lessons Learned and Future Challenges” organised by the EU-funded SHARAKA project for “Enhancing Understanding and Cooperation in EU-GCC Relations” between 28 and 29 October 2013 in Doha, Qatar. The conference addressed a number of security-related issues relevant to EU-GCC relations including energy and food security. |

Arab Countries Discuss Industrial Statistics and Classifications |
The Qatari capital, Doha, hosted on 30 September - 2 October 2013 a regional workshop on industrial statistics and classifications for the Arab countries. Capacity Development for Climate Change Negotiations for the Arab Countries |
Upon a request for support through Technical Cooperation from the League of Arab States (LAS), ESCWA jointly with the LAS conducted between 22 and 24 October 2013 a regional training workshop on “Capacity Development for Climate Change Negotiations for the Arab Countries” in Amman, Jordan. The workshop was hosted by the ESCWA Technology Centre at the facilities of the Jordanian Royal Scientific Society and attended by 16 participants from nine Member States. |

Regional Profile of the Information Society: the Arabic language sixth among the most used languages on the Internet |
The Internet penetration rate in the Arab region registered a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 21.9 per cent during the period 2005-2012 which is higher than the world average of 12.4 per cent. The forte of ICT infrastructure in the region are dynamic mobile service markets which saw a notable penetration rate CAGR of 21.4 per cent between 2005 and 2012, higher than the global rate at 15.2 per cent. Additionally, as of mid 2013, all Arab countries except three had deployed 3G services. |

The Digital Arabic Content Competitions for 2013 Open the Doors for Digital Products in Arabic |
ESCWA launched the digital Arabic content (DAC) competitions for 2013 between June and September in each of Palestine, Yemen and Lebanon under the slogan “Thinking digital? Let’s innovate in Arabic”. The competitions aimed at selecting the best and most innovative ideas in the field of DAC. They were launched in cooperation with the Palestine Information and Communication Technology Incubator (PICTI) in Palestine, the Science and Technology Centre at the University of Aden in Yemen, and Berytech in Lebanon. |
