Have Arab uprisings opened space for deeper, grassroots-driven decentralization reforms in the region? What are the optimum designs, sequencing and models of decentralization for countries in political transition? While political discourse in the region uniformly emphasizes reforming State institutions, decentralization reform agendas have unfolded along contrasting trajectories across Arab transition countries.

Beirut, 16 May, 2012 (ESCWA Communications and Information Unit)- A group of Political Studies students from the University of Helsinki visited ESCWA today and explored its objectives and programmes. The students were briefed by Ms. Ahed Sboul, Chief, Conference Services Section on the opportunities provided by the Regional Commission and the challenges it is facing, especially following the drastic change that has occurred in the region since January 2011.

How severely has the political, security and humanitarian crisis escalated in Iraq, Libya, Palestine and Syria? To what extent does it negatively affect neighboring countries? Are the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) maintaining a stable economic recovery? What are the financing gaps in the region? And what role does the regional economic integration occupy in the Arab region?
All these questions will be answered in the Survey conducted by ESCWA during a press conference held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday 19 November 2014, at the UN-House, Riad El Solh Square, Beirut.
